When Life Isn't Complicated Enough

Weight Loss Journey Week 6 of 2013

Naval Gazing

Ok Ok … Will the lazy sod please stand up! …. that will be me then!

This week I will list my weight loss failings *hangs head in shame*

I was nothing but a lazy so and so.. my cold meant no Hockey Training as I can barley breath when I am out there, add a blocked nose and copious amounts of snot .. not good.

I have unashamedly eaten rubbish, crisps and a takeaway without a second thought.

My final failing this week was the 9 hours of drinking in which over 7 pints of larger where consumed (and that’s just the ones I remember, I vaguely recollect a wine or 3??!)

I am pleased to report however a couple of my friends from the village who last year did very well on their fitness drive are going to be taking up 2 x 3 mile walks per week in the evenings and if I honest I am looking forward to joining in .. who knows maybe I could build myself up to running it? .. eventually

Ladies please be aware I may need a sick bag!

I have also while sat in my fat pants on the sofa been reading a great book called Naval Gazing about weight loss and the emotional connection that your head plays in this weight loss malarkey if anyone is interested then I have completed a review of the book HERE.

So my exercise targets for last week were:

  • A minimum of 3 x 2 mile walks  (min 6 Miles)
  • Attend both hockey training sessions (junior with Beth & ladies = 180 mins)
  • No Hockey match … (although I thought there was no match after I was looking at the wrong week).. its the blonde in me!

What exercise I actually completed this week:

  • 1 x 1 mile – Walk
  • 110 mins Hockey Match (we lost 6-1!)
  • No Hockey Training as I felt dreadful last Wednesday with a blooming cold.

So how did I do?

Remained the Same .. if I am honest I deserved to of gained!

Total Weight Loss This Year:

7.5lbs

Total Loss (including last year)

4 Stone 7.5lbs

Next Week’s Exercise:

  • A minimum of 2 x 3 mile walks (min 6 miles total)
  • Attend both hockey training sessions (junior with Beth & ladies = 180 mins)
  • Hockey Match Saturday so need to play the whole match!

This week I only have my lazy ass to blame! … come on lets get hyped for next week!

My Weight Loss Journey Week 5 of 2013

Weightloss Wlking wk5

After last week I set off this week with renewed vigor and got 3 walks completed in the early part of the week! I was eating reasonably well … then disaster struck …. a nasty cold has taken hold of Joshua and I and we have been battling heavy achy limbs and far too much snot to cope with.

All I can say is thank god I had batch cooked teas for this week! I barley have any energy to wipe my nose never mind cook a healthy meal!

Hockey tonight is not looking promising due to the pounding head I have had for the last few days, brought on by this cold. However we will see if it clears later.

So my exercise targets for last week were:

  • A minimum of 3 x 2 mile walks  (min 6 Miles)
  • Attend both hockey training sessions (junior with Beth & ladies = 180 mins)
  • No Hockey match … so just get my bum from the sofa!!

What exercise I actually completed this week:

  • 2 x 2 miles – Walks
  • 1 x 1 mile – Walk     – Total 5 miles
  • 140 mins Hockey Training – Due to changing weigh in day it would count on next weeks exercise

So how did I do?

– 0.5lbs

Total Weight Loss This Year:

7.5lbs

Total Loss (including last year)

4 Stone 7.5lbs

Next Week’s Exercise:

  • A minimum of 3 x 2 mile walks (min 6 miles total)
  • Attend both hockey training sessions (junior with Beth & ladies = 180 mins)
  • Hockey Match Saturday so need to play the whole match!

Not a great week however once again any loss is great but 7.5lbs in a month is still overall pretty great!

My Weight Loss Journey Week 4 of 2013

Weight Loss Wk4

After last week weight loss fail and my 0.7lbs increase I have to say I was more than a little deflated and spent until the weekend brooding!

Food wise the last 4 days have been back on track however while still brooding we did visit an all you can eat Chinese buffet! … probably not the wisest move!

I have also batch cooked all next weeks evening meals so there will be no excuse for eating pre processed frozen crap! I intend to try and cut down on my bread intake also next week. Although I am not a massive bread muncher last week while still sulking I did have a couple of days where I had quite a lot of bread.

So my exercise targets for last week were:

  • A minimum of 3 x 2 mile walks … again!
  • Attend both hockey training sessions (junior with Beth & ladies = 180 mins)
  • No Hockey match … so just get my bum from the sofa!!

What exercise I actually completed this week:

  • 1 x 2.2 miles – Walk
  • 1x 1 mile – Walk
  • 140 mins Hockey Training

Hockey Training I have to say was very hard this week since it was lashing it down with rain and it was beyond Baltic – hence the 40 cut short from my target!

Ok so not quite what I had wanted to achieve however if I had stopped sulking and got my finger out sooner this week I would of  hit my exercise targets! *mental note made – stop sulking*

So how did I do?

-1 lbs, yep that’s right I have Lost!

Total Weight Loss This Year:

7lbs

Total Loss (including last year)

4 Stone 7lbs

Next Week’s Exercise:

  • A minimum of 3 x 2 mile walks
  • Attend both hockey training sessions (junior with Beth & ladies = 180 mins)
  • No Hockey match on Saturday so get out for a long walk on Sunday

Having found the fab Kate from Naked Mum who is also on a weight loss journey I am linking up HERE so I can gain encouragement from others who are also on this long journey and also to spread some support to others.

Not the best week however a loss is still a loss and only I can turn it round next week!

Weight Loss, Exercise & Boobs, Baps & Bangers ..

Sports Bra

My goodness the list of names for boobs is a long one! … Whatever you call them us ladies are stuck with them.  I had never really thought of boobs in great detail, however since breastfeeding my son my boobs have gone through some dramatic changes.

I have very little … yep you read right … I have far smaller breasts than I had previously!

As most of you will know by now I am on the long journey of sheading lots of excess baby and chocolate weight and now I have finally acknowledged that my boobs are different I want to make sure what I have got is being looked after!

During the previous year in which I shed almost 4 stones, I have started 2013 as I mean to go on and I have upped the exercise anti! Which is why I have been looking at my undergarments!!??

I currently wear a sports bra while playing hockey however honestly (and I might as well be honest since I have mentioned boobs how many times?) … it doesn’t fit!   I bought it almost 6 years ago.  So why I have been wearing it now?  Simple – My choices were limited;

Option 1 – Padded T-shirt bras – support nil

Option 2 – Too tight sports bra

Out of the 2, at least option 2 means the world and his wife are not watching what little breast tissue I do have swing from one side of the hockey pitch to the other!  … So my choice was made … until now.

After having endured hours and hours of pain and rubbing in this incredibly tight undergarment I have been searching for a sports bra that FITS – Where to start though?

My first port of call was … yep you guessed it – the internet.  So what do I need to be looking for in a sports bra and why?

Our boobs are made up of fatty tissue and they are supported by quite delicate ligaments called the Cooper’s Ligaments. I have been shocked to find out that If they are not supported correctly then this will cause the dreaded ‘saggy boob’ look, along with possibly causing upper back and boob pain! …. Do us ladies really need more pain?? NOPE

Having discovered what can happen if I don’t get my little bangers into something to support them I dread to think what they will look like when I am older…. Shrivelled fried eggs maybe??  Not on my watch!

So once the mini panic attack subsided I set out on my mission to secure the mammaries and keep going on my weight loss journey.

While on my search mission I found out that the principle is the same for finding your sports bra size and your normal bra! …. Who knew??! Also you must remember to try different brands and sizes to get the level of support you require and to check that it does not rub or chafe.

I have found that although I am a certain size in my day to day bra my sports bra size actually differs from that size so remember ….. TRY THEM ON!

It is also just as important to ensure you buy a sports bra with the level of support you require for your chosen activity. A sports bra for light activity is not going to give you enough support if you’re cross country running.. However it may just give you a black eye!

So my exercise buddies get yourselves kitted out with the most essential part of your exercise kit and take care of those bad boys if you don’t once they are all saggy and you’re tying them in a bow you will wish you had listened!

I have now got a new sports bra courtesy of the very generous folks at Figleaves which I have put through its paces and reviewed so you can take a look HERE

My Weight Loss Journey Week 3 of 2013

After last year’s weight loss of 4 stone and my 2 previous weeks of successful weight loss I have felt rather elated over the whole thing .. yep strange I know!

Then the snow hit and it has continued to plague my fitness efforts this week by causing all Hockey training to be cancelled and has stopped me getting out walking properly with my pushchair.

Then to top it off I have now succumbed to Tonsillitis, although it has not completely taken hold like it has in the past, I have to say I am not feeling very sprightly. Needless to say I have not been as good as I should have been ……….

Ok I lied ….

I have eaten crap!

Firstly this fellow:

Weigh Loss wk3

I am bad I know and I have no excuse, however this was the most amazing thing EVER!

So my exercise targets for last week were:

  • A minimum of 3 x 2 mile walks … again!
  • Attend both hockey training sessions (junior with Beth & ladies = 180 mins)
  • No Hockey match … so just get my bum from the sofa!!

So a big fat fail for me on the exercise front, so how have I done

+ 0.7lbs, yep that’s right I have gained

I am not going to stress over it but I am starting the next week how I mean to go on and praying that my husband does not bring home boxes of Jaffa cakes from work … again!!

Total Weight Loss This Year (minus my gain this week):

6lbs

Total Loss (including last year)

4 Stone 6lbs

Next Week’s Exercise:

  • A minimum of 3 x 2 mile walks
  • Attend both hockey training sessions (junior with Beth & ladies = 180 mins)

My Weight Loss Journey – Week 2 of 2013

weight loss wk2

After last weeks post on my weight loss journey(you can read HERE)I realised I may just be able to do this .. so with my second wind and confidence boosted I set myself some exercise targets for last week:

  • A minimum of 3 x 2 mile walks
  • Attend both hockey training sessions (junior with Beth & ladies = 180 mins)
  • Play the full 70 minute match on Saturday.

Although full of good intention I only achieved one out of the three!!
I played the full 70 minutes of my hockey match, wearing my new super duper hockey shoes which I have also reviewed HERE.

I managed 2 out of the 3, 2 mile walks but the blasted weather has me beaten! Pushchairs and ice are not a good mix and although I went out to try for my 3rd walk to hit my target it was stopped short when I nearly lost my footing in the ice and nearly ended in the middle of the road with Joshua in his chariot!

Unfortunately hockey training this week was cancelled due to a solid pitch and the playing surface being very unsafe so I was gutted I didn’t get my new Hockey Shoes on from www.sportsshoes.com yesterday.

Food wise this week I have really tried although I have succumbed to Swiss roll and custard one evening and the 12 boxes of Jaffa Cakes Ollie has brought home from his works shop! – I feel I need to explain where he works they have a shop and in this shop he is able to purchase massively reduced priced food items that are coming up to the use by date.

This week’s purchase was 12 boxes of damn Jaffa Cakes, which I love! However you will be pleased to know that I have not eaten all 12 boxes just the odd Jaffa cake!

So D-day today …. Drum roll please …

Another loss!!

So my loss so far this year:

Last Week =  -3.5lbs

This Week = -3.2lbs

So total loss (this includes last year)

4st 6.7lbs

Next weeks targets:

  • A minimum of 3 x 2 mile walks … again!
  • Attend both hockey training sessions (junior with Beth & ladies = 180 mins)
  • No Hockey match … so just get my bum from the sofa!!

After my post last week I want to show some diet love to my co dieters on their recent progress, why not pop along and show them some love too!

Vicky @ Verily, Victoria Vocalises  who is a massive inspiration to me on this hard slog and who is doing such an amazing job on her own weight loss journey

Claire @ www.shhhquietmummy.wordpress.com who is now also in my weight loss gang! well done on the loss for last week, fingers crossed for another loss!

My Weight Loss Journey – Week 1 of 2013

As you will know after my post HERE I am back on my weight loss journey after a 4 stone loss from last year.

Last week if I am honest my healthy eating kind of went out of the window when I ended up devouring the remaining Christmas crap!

I started with such good intentions however I needed rid the Oliver house of crap as my willpower is not strong enough to overpower my crap eating urges so ….

YES I ATE ALL THE PIES! (Apple) … Chocolate …. Crisps and anything else that contained far too many calories and fat!

Having said that I have been back on the walking mission, but again if I am honest it’s not been the amount of times I should have been! *hangs head in shame*

The final downfall has been the hockey training that should have been on last Wednesday (in my head anyway) when in fact it didn’t start again till last night!

So after what I thought was a dire week (well 10 days anyway)  …….. I lost!!

*Victory dance underway*

So my loss so far this year:

1 -10 January = 3.5lbs!

So total loss (this includes last year)

4st 3.5lbs

I will be taking my measurement on a Thurday each week so I don’t get too OCD over the process.

My Excersise Targets for Next week:

  • A minimum of 3 x 2 mile walks
  • Attend both hockey training sessions (junior with Beth & ladies = 180 mins)
  • Play the full 70 minute match on Saturday.

..… my god what am I doing?????

Well as I type next weeks weight loss is underway this is breakfast & lunch ….

A New Me? .. or Maybe Just a Half Sized Version?

January 2012

At this time of year we of course think about what bad habit we are going to change in the upcoming year and we make resolutions to improve ourselves.

Last year I made a resolution to lose some weight. After a rather traumatic experience in Boots on one of those electronic scales that prints you your weight and BMI for you to keep for posterity (as if!) I knew that being 18 stones and only being 5 foot tall was very very bad news and I could no longer hide from the fact I was seriously overweight.

One of my main problems was the Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction I developed when I was about 6 months pregnant with Joshua and I was hiding behind the pain and used it as excuse not to do anything. I hoped that after giving birth to Joshua it would improve like all the books said, however my pain never got better (read about it here)

So with my battle with constant on-going pain I had presumed that I would never shift this weight. However since I was in pain anyway I thought I would just take pain relief and have to do what I could.

This year I have improved the families eating habits by including more veg within the meals I cook as well as buying smaller dinner plates to stop me from over eating. I upped my exercise to walking every day and doing aqua aerobics. Then once the weight started to go down I took up Zumba and then Hockey (all with the aide of my trusty pelvic support).

This has not been an easy journey it has been pure hell since my pelvis is so unstable the pain can be excruciating but I know that the only thing I can do to try and relieve the pressure and to lose the weight. The only other option is surgery to have my pelvis pinned and plated back together however the surgeons don’t want to do this until I am in my 40’s and the chance of this working is only 50% effective so I want to do everything I can to not have to go down this route however some days I just wish I could have the surgery and hope that it worked.

This year I have lost almost 4 stones and my weight now fluctuates at the 14 stone mark. Which although I know some people will be able to lose more weight in a quicker time frame I am glad I have lost it gradually and its staying off.

The coming year I will be increasing the activity and will be getting back to Zumba and Hockey and I am hoping to try and get out every day for the 2 mile walks I first started to lose weight with too.

I will be setting myself a target for June to of lost between 1 ½ stone – 2 stones as the Oliver’s are going on their first holiday aboard together so I would love to fit in an aeroplane seat comfortably  and although I won’t be wearing a bikini I do want to feel more comfortable in my own skin.

I am really nervous about the next stage of my weight loss journey but I know I have to do this for the sake of my own health.

Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (Pelvic Girdle Pain)

PGP

This condition has now been in my life for approximately 3 years and it’s the one thing that reduces me to tears on a daily basis. I developed this condition in my second trimester of pregnancy with Joshua and throughout I was told this condition will rectify itself after birth.

My son is now nearly 21 months old and this condition is still with me and is more painful than ever with no signs of reprieve.

SPD is not only a pregnancy related condition it can be developed in men and women that have previously had a fall or damage to the pelvic area.  Although the majority of cases are brought on by pregnancy hormones, which work to loosen the ligament that holds the pubic bones together (Pubic Symphysis) in order to allow babys head to pass through the pelvis when giving birth.

In my case I had trauma to the pelvis a few years back along with extra weight before my pregnancy. That added to excessive weight gain throughout my pregnancy and the hormone changes in pregnancy .. bingo.. unstable pelvis at the sacroiliac joints and the Pubic Symphysis joint.

I was signed off work by my 7th month of pregnancy due to the condition as I worked at a desk all day and found it unbearable to sit for any length of time; I was having physio weekly and was advised that unless I gave up work and started to rest more I would damage my pelvis permanently.

I wore the pregnancy support belt I was given day and night along with 4 layers of bandaging I wore all the time to try and correct the instability in my pelvis. Nothing worked; I barely slept and was in constant pain.

After my son’s birth by elective section I was looking forward to the pain subsiding and for things to get back to normal but with each passing month my hope disappeared. I was informed by the physio at my local hospital that I needed physio 2-3 times per week but they could only fit me in once every 3-4 weeks.

Running out of options I visited a chiropractor and found this and acupuncture helped for the following 2 days after an appointment, but at a cost of £30 per visit and 1-2 visits per week we could only afford this for 6 months so I have now been without physio or a chiropractor for nearly 2 years

Joshua slept through the night from 5 weeks old and even now I do not sleep solidly through the night as I wake up 3-6 times a night with excruciating pain in one or both of my hips and or legs. My hips, pelvis and lower back all crack and crunch and I can feel both sides of my pelvis moving independently.

Last January I finally had my appointment come through after waiting months and months to see a specialist at the hospital.  On seeing the Consultant he sent me for X-rays and confirmed that I had this condition (really, I never would of guessed) and was told to lose some weight and once I am in my 40’s they would consider me for surgery (I am only 33 currently) He also told me that the surgery is not always effective and at only a 50% success rate it may not be worthwhile doing.

I feel like I have a body of a 90 year old and although I am doing everything I can to help myself I am increasingly disheartened and I am beginning to think things will never improve.

I do have incredibly low periods with this condition whereI can’t stand to keep taking all the pain killers but know if I don’t I could have days where I am in such immense pain it hurts to make any movement at all.

I took voluntary redundancy last year from work while on maternity leave as I knew that sitting at my desk will be excruciating and I would not of been able to maintain it in the long term. This does get me down thinking about the pain I will endure if and when I have to return back to work as some days I can’t even manage the most basic of household duties without bursting into tears.

I want to play with my kids; I want to carry out normal life without having to fit in things while I am having a good day.

Don’t get me wrong I know there are people out there that are far worse off than me and I try to think about this when I am getting down, although it doesn’t always work at keeping me positive.

I cannot tell you how debilitating this condition actually is, it affects every aspect of my life and that of my family. Maybe one day I will be old enough for the surgery and my health and quality of life will improve, until then I will continue down the weight loss route and keep taking the pain killers.
